Darra Bishop is the child of an electrical engineer and an artist, was born to design
daringly. Coming of age between Pittsburgh and Paris, she was exposed to
extraordinary visions of the traditional, the classic and the avant-garde.  Passionate
for all things mod and modern, Darra Bishop invents spaces that tell stories. Her
tailored environments come from an intimate knowledge and understanding of her
client’s needs and desires.

Darra’s devotion to the field extends beyond her design practice. She is the Editor-in-
Chief of LA Design Magazine – the magazine for the Los Angeles Chapter of the
American Society of Interior Designers, where she also serves on the board as
Director-at-Large. She received her Masters of Interior Architecture from UCLA/Cal
Poly Pomona.

Design Philosophy

Good design considers form and function. How a room is used influences the visual
result. In the end, it isn’t about decoration but carefully conceived design that is as
useful as it is inspiring. Your home should tell your story beautifully, whether it is
realized in 300 square feet or 3000.

Darrell Schmitt, FASID, CID, graduated with a BFA in Interior Design from the Chicago Academy of
Fine Arts.  Schmitt headed his own interior design firm in new Orleans for fifteen years before moving
to Los Angeles in l987,  where he joined James Northcutt Associates, an innovative hospitality design
firm which became world renowned for its timeless, classic approach to interior design.  In 1997,
Schmitt re-established his own firm in Los Angeles.

Projects designed by Schmitt include The Montage Beverly Hills, The Resort at Pelican Hill, The
Peninsula Beverly Hills, Casa del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica, Calistoga Ranch in Napa Valley, and
several Four Seasons hotels and resorts, as well as prestigious residential projects around the world.
In 2010 he completed design and construction on the first LEED Platinum-certified building in
Ventura County, California. His award winning work has been published in Architectural Digest,
Interior Design, House & Garden, Hospitality Design, and numerous other magazines and books.

A 40 year member of the American Society of Interior Designers, Schmitt has served as president of
two chapters, and in 2009 was named the Society’s “Designer of Distinction,” the highest national
honor given to acknowledge the quality of a designer’s body of work.  In 2012 he was inducted as a
Fellow of ASID.
